My choice for January 2007 scorpion is Hottentotta judaicus. This scorpion is not that big. They're about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long (atleast the ones I have). Hottentotta judaicus are not picky eaters. They eat anything that moves no matter what the size is. They'll sting as soon as they get ahold of their prey. One way to differentiate between Hottentotta franzwerneri gentili and Hottentotta judaicus is by looking at their telson. H.f.gentili have reddish telson and Hottentotta judaicus have black telson.

Keeping Hottentotta judaicus is really easy. I have kept them in cold condition (13-20C degrees) and warm condition (28-30C degrees). No matter how I kept them, they survived and doesn't seem to mind about the condition they are in. I am now keeping them in a 10 gallon (20x10x10) split tank with day and night temperature. I'd say 28 - 31C degrees during the day and 22C degrees at night. I have always kept them dry and usually offer water every 2 weeks. They are very tolerant species and can be kept in various condition.

I have never seen this species dig. They are usually hanging upside down under stones. I gave them 1 inch of peat moss and some stones where they can sit upside down. I am keeping 6 Hottentotta judaicus communally and no cannibalism so far. Pics below!

I'd say they are communal species.

As for food. You can give them about anything. Drop some crickets in a communal set-up of H.judaicus and you will enjoy watching a massacre of crickets.
I try to keep my scorpions the best way I can and best condition I can give them. If you ever decide to keep this species in the future. Here's how you can keep them:
CAPTIVE CONDITION
Hottentotta judaicus:
H. judaicus: "Females with 22-27 (usually 24-25) denticles, males with 27-32 (usually 28-31)" Levy & Amitai 1980 (I got this info from Nazgul in another thread (thank you!)).
Communal: YES
Temperature: 13C degrees to 30C degrees
Humidity:Dry
Water:offer water in bottle cap every 2 weeks
Substrate:1 inch of peat moss
Hiding spots:Give them stones where they can sit upside down and they'll be happy
I guess that's it. Please add more information if you can and do not hesitate to ask.
Thanks to BrianS and VL crew for giving me a chance to participate in scorpion of the month archive.
